The Department of Dairy Science at Virginia Tech has an active teaching, research and extension program dedicated to enrich the lives and productivity of the population of the Commonwealth of Virginia.  To this end faculty and staff in the Department have gained proficiency in numerous areas related to production systems of the Dairy industry. The major areas of expertise support production, nutrition, reproduction, lactation and genetics of dairy animals.

VIRGINIA DAIRY GOAT BREEDERS ASSOCIATION (VDGBA)

The purpose of the association is to promote all matters pertaining to the history, publicity, breeding, exhibition, and improvement of milk production in dairy goats. This is a family oriented organization offering membership to families or singles who are interested in helping promote our purposes. The organization meets the second Sunday of each month and puts out a bi-monthly newsletter.

Scholarship - To youth participants at the Fall Show, in Richmond, VA. Criteria: 1) Show goats and participate in the Showmanship class at the fall show, 2) Provide a copy of completed 4-H, FFA/FHA Project book, 3) Maintain a daily diary of duties performed in the daily care of the goat they own from 1 July until the show date signed by the youth, parent and 4-H leader, and 4) Participate in the fund raiser project for the scholarship program which consists of selling ads for the fall show. Blue Ridge Goat Club
This is a nine-year-old organization with 20-25 members, most of whom live in or around Roanoke and New River Valleys.  Monthly meetings on Sunday afternoon are held at member's homes and consist of a business meeting, educational program, and a short social during which goat milk products are often served.  The club usually sponsors two or more shows per year, including those in Roanoke and at the New River Valley Fair.  A monthly newsletter updates members with minutes of previous meetings, date and place for future meetings, show results, and also contains columns and recipes written and contributed by various members.   Membership fee is $10 for a single and $15 for a family.  Contact person is Ed Kinser, 540/929-4688, or email Ed at ejkinser@worldnet.att.net .
