Dairy Products


The Nutrition Facts Label shows the percent calcium based on a daily value (DV) of 1000 mg for a serving of food.  Any food containing 20% DV can be labeled a rich source.  According to the Food Guide Pyramid, milk, yogurt, and cheese are dairy foods that are rich sources of calcium.

Objective

To demonstrate the vast assortment of dairy products available to consumers that are a rich source of calcium.

Materials

  • Dairy product packages and containers
  • Cheese samples with package labels

How To

  1. Survey local grocery stores.  Look for labels that contain 20% DV calcium in a serving.
  2. Discuss dairy products and how they are used by different families.  Show various dairy product packages and containers during your discussion.
  3. Distribute cheese samples and discuss cheese varieties.

Outcome/Impact

Students will be able to name five dairy products that can be found at the local grocery store that provide a rich source of calcium.
